EU Platform on Food Losses & Food Waste: reducing food waste, ensuring food security, fighting climate change.

The aim of the meeting is to discuss the latest challenges faced by our food system today and how food loss and waste prevention can help alleviate some of their negative effects. Liz Goodwin, Senior Fellow and Director on Food Loss and Waste at the World Resources Institute will provide a perspective on how reduction of food loss and waste can help address the global crisis affecting our food system and share the latest global developments in food loss and waste prevention. Claire Bury, Deputy-Director General of the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety will highlight the importance of reducing food losses and food waste as a critical foundation for the transition to sustainable food systems, helping to reduce the environmental and climate impact of our food systems and address challenges to food security.

Members who are co-chairing the different thematic working groups of the Platform will update participants on their respective areas of work and planned deliverables. Ongoing work includes preparation of an overview of voluntary agreements to reduce food waste in Europe, an assessment of food redistribution practices across the EU and sharing best practice in measuring and reducing food waste in the food services and hospitality sector.

During the meeting, the Commission will update members on the implementation of the Farm to Fork Strategy, including the preparation of the legislative proposal to set EU-level targets for food waste reduction. Main findings from the consumer research to investigate new ways of expressing date marking will be presented for the first time. The research was carried out in the context of the revision of EU rules on date marking to prevent food waste linked to misunderstanding and/or misuse of these dates.
